YMCA Summer Basketball Clinics
ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
Research shows that enjoyment is a key factor in encouraging students to play sports and enjoy the many cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits that they afford. A study conducted in November, 2016 by the American Psychological Association found that:
Sports can help kids stay fit, make friends, and develop important qualities like determination and discipline. Unfortunately, 70 percent of young athletes drop out of team sports by age 13, citing lack of fun as their main reason for quitting.
Building on the success of the Y's spring and summer middle school and high school programs and keeping the key factor of enjoyment in mind, the YMCA is excited to offer the opportunity for late middle school and high school players (kids entering 8-12 grades) to play basketball this summer. The program will be offered Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00 PM. Players will engage in a half hour of drills and skill building activities before playing an hour of games. Coaches will focus on teamwork, good ball movement, and individual improvement.
In order to maximize the success of the program, the Y asks that players commit to the following credo:
Come to play hard, learn the game and enjoy yourself.
Respect the game, your teammates, opponents, and coaches.
Given the complexity of summer schedules, it is not necessary to attend every session. Players are welcome to drop in when available.
